Premier League club Fulham have encountered a significant hurdle in their pursuit of Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu, Naija Footy reports.
Turkish side Trabzonspor has set a hefty €35m price tag on the highly sought-after centre-back, complicating the London club’s chances of securing the player.
The 22-year-old Nwaiwu joined Trabzonspor from Nigeria’s Enyimba International in January for €5.5m. Despite being new to Turkish football, he quickly made his mark, playing a pivotal role in Trabzonspor’s Turkish Cup triumph. His performances have caught the attention of several European clubs, including Fulham, who featured three Nigerian internationals in their squad last season.
Fulham had reportedly been preparing a bid in the region of €10m, but Trabzonspor’s valuation far exceeds this figure, likely forcing them to reconsider their strategy. The Turkish club views the imposing 1.93m-tall defender as a cornerstone of their long-term plans and reportedly has no intention of letting him go anytime soon.
Trabzonspor sees Nwaiwu as instrumental in their ambitions of securing UEFA Champions League qualification in the years ahead. Consequently, they are firm on their valuation and reluctant to sell him for less. For Fulham to acquire the Nigerian international, they would need to significantly increase their offer—a challenging prospect given that Nwaiwu has yet to complete a full season of top-tier football outside Nigeria.
While Premier League teams are often capable of meeting substantial transfer fees for emerging talents, the €25m disparity between Fulham’s proposal and Trabzonspor’s asking price poses a daunting negotiation challenge. Unless Fulham secures additional financial backing for a much higher bid, a move to Craven Cottage seems unlikely in the short term.
As Nwaiwu’s reputation continues to rise, his future may remain a topic of interest for subsequent transfer windows, with both clubs and fans keeping a close eye on developments surrounding the talented defender.
