Benin Republic’s head coach, Gernot Rohr, has voiced his belief in the growing prominence of African football, asserting that teams from the continent are now capable of competing on an equal level with the traditional global football giants.
In an interview with Footy-Africa following his attendance at several matches in the United States, the former Super Eagles coach highlighted the diminishing gap between African nations and their counterparts from Europe and South America. He attributed this progress to improvements in organisation, tactical awareness, and physical conditioning within African teams, which he believes have positioned them as formidable opponents on the world stage.
Rohr singled out Morocco and Senegal as prime examples of Africa’s evolving football strength, predicting strong performances from both nations at future FIFA World Cups. He referenced Morocco’s groundbreaking semi-final achievement at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as a testament to the strides African football has taken, emphasizing that teams from the continent are now equipped to handle the physical and strategic demands of elite competition.
While optimistic about Africa’s potential to make further breakthroughs at the highest level, Rohr expressed regret over Nigeria’s absence from recent World Cups. During his tenure, he led the Super Eagles to the 2018 World Cup in Russia and oversaw their campaign through the final playoff round for Qatar 2022. He lamented the team’s failure to qualify, describing it as a missed opportunity given the talent within Nigeria’s squad. Rohr noted that this had deprived fans of seeing more top Nigerian players on football’s biggest stage.
Despite this disappointment, he remains hopeful that Africa is on the verge of achieving historic success at the World Cup, identifying Morocco and Senegal as leading candidates to spearhead the charge forward.
