USA overpower Australia to move closer to World Cup group triumph

The United States took a significant step toward securing the top spot in Group D at the FIFA World Cup with a confident 2-0 victory over Australia, witnessed by an electrified crowd in Seattle on Thursday.

The co-hosts delivered a lively performance to notch consecutive World Cup wins for the first time since 1930. This result leaves them in prime position to claim first place in the group, which will be confirmed if Turkey does not beat Paraguay later in the day.

Despite the absence of their injured captain, Christian Pulisic, Mauricio Pochettino’s team controlled the first half and found an early breakthrough in the 11th minute. Australian defender Cameron Burgess accidentally turned the ball into his own net while trying to intercept a dangerous cross from Folarin Balogun, who had dashed down the flank to deliver it.

The United States extended their lead just before halftime when Alex Freeman capitalized on a deflected shot from Sergiño Dest, nodding the ball past goalkeeper Patrick Beach. Though the goal was initially ruled offside, a VAR review overturned the decision, allowing it to stand.

Australia struggled offensively, managing only one significant chance early on when Mohamed Toure forced a save within the opening minute. The Socceroos showed more promise in the second half with the introduction of winger Nestory Irankunda, whose pace and creativity added energy to their attack. However, they could not find a way through the resolute American defense.

Balogun, who had scored twice in the USA’s 4-1 victory over Paraguay, delivered another strong performance but missed a clear opportunity to net in the second half. As the Americans scaled back their aggressive pressing late in the match, Australian captain Harry Souttar nearly pulled one back for his side. Nonetheless, the United States comfortably saw out the game, bolstering their chances of securing a favorable path in the knockout rounds.
