Boniface’s stint in Bremen has been challenging, following the collapse of a potential move to AC Milan last summer due to a failed medical. Afterward, Bayer Leverkusen approved a loan transfer to Werder Bremen, as then-coach Erik ten Hag reportedly considered the Nigerian an excess option in the squad.
While expectations were high for Boniface to play a pivotal role at Bremen, he struggled to secure consistent game time, frequently finding himself on the bench. His situation took a turn for the worse in December when he sustained a knee injury that required surgery and sidelined him for several months.
The Nigerian international returned to full training last month but was unable to feature in another competitive match before the season’s conclusion. Ahead of Werder Bremen’s final Bundesliga game against Borussia Dortmund, the club announced that Boniface will return to Leverkusen, where he remains under contract for two more years.
Expressing his gratitude, Boniface shared a heartfelt message on the social media platform X (formerly twitter), thanking the club’s staff, his teammates, and fans for their support during his tenure at Bremen.
”Wow. Crazy season for me, a lot has happened. Just want to say thank you very much to fans and staff and players.”
Now back with Bayer Leverkusen, the striker is poised to compete for a place in coach Kasper Hjulmand’s squad as he aims to rediscover the form that contributed to the team’s Bundesliga triumph two seasons ago.
