Jollof Derby: Flying Eagles thrash Ghana 4-2 in WAFU U-20 opener

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles began their WAFU B U-20 Championship campaign with an entertaining 4-2 victory over Ghana, Naija Footy reports. The result gives Nigeria an early three points and a strong start in their bid to progress in the regional competition.

Nigeria took the lead after only six minutes when Olayemi Ayinla finished to put the Flying Eagles in front. The early advantage gave Nigeria confidence as they looked to impose themselves on their West African rivals.

Oraro Lucky doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 30th minute before Muiz Adeleke added a third shortly before half-time. Ghana managed to respond with two goals, but Nigeria went into the latter stages still holding a significant advantage.

Adeleke completed his brace in the 89th minute, converting from the penalty spot to restore Nigeria’s two-goal cushion and seal the victory. His two goals capped an impressive individual performance in an attacking display that produced four goals for the Flying Eagles.

The victory will provide Nigeria with considerable encouragement at the start of their campaign, although conceding twice will give the coaching staff areas to address before their next fixture. Ghana’s ability to find a way back into the match showed that Nigeria cannot afford to relax against their remaining opponents.

Nigeria will now look to build on the result in their next group match. The Flying Eagles have made the ideal start, but they will need to maintain their attacking sharpness while tightening up defensively if they are to challenge for the WAFU B U-20 title.
