Nigeria’s Super Falcons endured a surprising 3-2 loss to Malawi in their opening Group C match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat, Naija Footy reports.
This victory marked Malawi’s first-ever in the tournament, immediately intensifying pressure on the defending champions to retain their title.
During the first half, the Falcons struggled to establish their rhythm, with forwards Esther Okoronkwo, Florence Ijamilusi, and Chiwendu Ihezuo unable to significantly challenge the Malawian defense. Nigeria’s sluggish build-up play, inaccurate passes, and lack of urgency in attack allowed the newcomers to stay competitive and gain confidence.
Malawi took the lead in the 73rd minute when Temwa Chawinga capitalized on a long pass, bypassed Chiamaka Nnadozie, and scored into an open net. Her sister, Tabitha Chawinga, extended the lead six minutes later after Nigeria failed to manage another ball behind their defense, putting the Falcons in an unexpected two-goal deficit.
Nigeria managed to score in the 89th minute through captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who calmly converted a penalty after Malawi was penalized for handball. However, as it seemed possible for Nigeria to salvage a point, Temwa struck again deep into stoppage time, completing her brace and solidifying Malawi’s control.
Uchenna Kanu further reduced the deficit shortly after, making it 3-2, but Nigeria couldn’t level the score before the final whistle. This defeat is a significant setback for the team that entered as defending champions, while the Chawinga sisters made history by netting Malawi’s inaugural goals at the finals.
Next, the Falcons will face Zambia in a critical Group C clash, which is now vital for their advancement hopes. Zambia brings its own attacking prowess with Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji, so Nigeria must swiftly address their defensive issues highlighted by Malawi if they aim to revive their campaign and keep their title defense alive.
