Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has expressed satisfaction over his decision to represent Nigeria at international level as he closes in on a major milestone with the national team, Naija Footy reports.
The Fulham midfielder is expected to make his 100th appearance for Nigeria when the Super Eagles face Portugal in an international friendly on Wednesday. Should he feature in the encounter, Iwobi will become the quickest player to reach the century mark in the history of the national team.
Having made his senior debut against the Democratic Republic of Congo in October 2015, the former Arsenal player is now on the verge of achieving the feat in less than 11 years. His journey with the national team has seen him grow into one of Nigeria’s most reliable players, featuring at the FIFA World Cup and multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
Reflecting on his decision to switch allegiance despite representing England at youth level, Iwobi insisted he remains proud of the path he chose and believes Nigeria has always felt like home.
“I am proud to be where I am today; proud to wear the green-and-white,” Iwobi told the NFF Media. “I am grateful to everyone, including the coach who called me up to the team for the first time. I have no regrets choosing Nigeria. “I first went to the Nigeria U23 team camp and felt at home. I had represented England at youth level but always felt Nigeria was home.”
Iwobi also revealed the role his father played during the process, while stressing that the final decision ultimately remained his.
“My father always told me to go out there and enjoy my football, and make the decision that I felt was good for me. He was part of the decision but he didn’t force it down on me.”
Despite his achievements and years of service, the midfielder remains modest about his legacy with the Super Eagles.
“After 10 years and eight months, I won’t say I am a legend; I only see myself as a Super Eagles’ player. “It feels great to be looking at a 100th cap, and on a lighter note, I wish I can add another 100 caps. I have enjoyed my time with the Super Eagles.”
